We like: 2004 Basic Conditioning Practice Taiwan

Next in our “men who hate trees” series is a classic by our teacher Mike Martello (RIP). Mike shows a series of conditioning exercises for hands, arms, legs, and body. Many of which you can also do with a partner. The key is technique and body mechanics, which you can clearly see in this clip. Like Mike says:
The idea is not hit the tree extra hard, but let the natural body weight of the limbs hit in repetition.
As Mike used to say: Enjoy objectively! Continue reading

We like: Han’s baji tree practice

Hitting trees is big in some of the traditional styles in CMA as a form of “hardening” exercises if you don’t have a partner around. I remember once in Beijing hitting trees in the area near my apartment, when an old woman came up to me and scolded me for “destroying” the precious trees. Anyway, I had to move on to another patch of trees. Maybe we’ll open a new series “men who hate trees”, if we can find more good tree hitting clips. Continue reading

We like: Yantai TV Tanglang Quan Documentary 烟台电视台《螳螂拳》

Nice short documentary about Tanglang Quan. They talk a little about the origins and characteristics of the general style as well as the four big sub-styles. Their four consist of: Taiji, Taiji Meihua, Qixing, and Liuhe Tanglang. Some might substitute Taiji with Babu here. I guess they made this choice, since it’s a mainland documentary (from Yantai) and Babu is not very big there. Anyway, prepare for some nice demonstrations. However, I have to add that I personally didn’t enjoy the Meihua in this video that much. Continue reading
